It's an old, old story...the pathetic, tragic, sabotaging of the Kingdom movement from within the sanctuary. The Christ of the fields, the marketplaces, the back alleys of the marginalized has been entombed in cathedrals and holy places, and has been rendered innocuous by making him Lord of the lips and hymn books. Frequently, art has been employed to remove him from the world. Thus, those that found that his life had made to great demands upon theirs got rid of him by exalting him to another world of existence, which left them free to live their life unmolested. With skillful use of Scripture verses, they developed maps and plans for finding him only in the next world. There was nothing wrong with the way they said, " Lord, Lord." The error was that their way of life was so foreign to his. ( Sermon on the Mount, by Clarence Jordan 1952 )
